Bluno

I wanna talk to my Arduino wirelessly.  All smartphones have bluetooth, so I bought a BLUno off Amazon.  It arrived quickly, straight outta China:

That's when the problems began.  BLE (Bluetooth 4.0) is very particular  -- it is NOT backward compatible to "classic bluetooth."  

No one at Xerocraft had a new enough phone to speak BLE.  My ASUS tablet would not update past Jelly Bean 4.2


There are cell phone apps that work wirelessly with the BLUno Accessory Shield:

Only the latest iPhones supports BLE, nominally the 4S, 5C and 5S.


In addition to a BLE smart phone, we really needed a Bluno Accessory Shield to do much with the BLUno:

Against David's advice, I ordered the shield.

Once we get all the correct equipment, we should be able to repeat the video below:



Ultimately I would like to use the BLUno to control a sculpture with one's cell phone.



USING THE BLUno

This looks simple.  After downloading the zip file, one needs to open the BLUNO_DEMO.ino sketch in the BLUno to test it -- "This Sketch only do one thing that replies the same message received from Serial port"

We need to install 3 libraries into the Arduino IDE -- "PlainProtocol.h"     "U8glib.h" and    "blunoAccessory.h"





It seems to me that we can upload a sketch to the BLUno without connecting it to the USB port.  But I may be wrong.



The DFRobot Bluno combines an Arduino Uno with a Bluetooth 4.0 controller. You can program the board wirelessly, the same way you would with an Arduino Uno and USB.


Then there is the BLEduino -- except that it's not ready yet.  This Kickstarter project has yet to deliver, even though 2 deadlines have passed.

Maybe it would be easier to just buy a "classic bluetooth" shield, to talk to all phones.




It gets more interesting.  Perhaps we can use this BLE, and therefore the BLUno, to work with iBeacons.

iBeacons are characterized as "wireless QR codes."  As one moves through a room, objects can interact with his smart phone.  Sounds a bit like Minority Report:

This sounds like Google Nearby.

Perhaps I can use the BLUno and iBeacons to make sculptures that interact with your cell phone.  It seems that someone else has already thought about that.

Arduinos

We are doing some Arduino classes at Xerocraft hackerspace.  I would like to use an Arduino to make a "cell phone controlled sculpture," though I really don't know what I'm doing yet.  However, I'm making this entry to collect all the links and other important information, as I make progress.

Odd Musical Ideas

David Byrne "played the building" with a midi controller:



I'd like to walk into a warehouse carrying a suitcase of solenoid hammers. I'd then place them around the building, on the metal parts that sound sweetest when hit with small hammers. If the solenoid hammers were wireless, we might even get the audience to play using their cell phones. I can even see someone poking his iPhone with a stylus, to accompany the Anarchestra with solenoid hammer rhythms.

Haptic Input

Handibot and Japanese Joinery

Can we not do Japanese joinery with the Handibot, and construct big structures from a little CNC machine?

Eric Schimelphfenig on the Handibot forum is already converting these Japanese joinery files into Handibot files.

Here's a quick tip for adjusting the fit tolerance. Instead of offsetting the parts in your drawing, use the "Allowance Offset" in the profile Toolpathing section, or "Pocket Allowance" when doing pocketing. It does the same thing as offsetting, without actually resizing the parts in your drawing which can cause problems down the road.

In an outside profile cut, a positive number for the allowance makes the part cut larger, and a negative number makes it cut smaller. It's opposite in a pocket or an inside profile...a positive allowance makes the pocket/cut smaller, and a negative makes it larger.

Cell Phone Controlled Sculpture

Artist Adolph "Ad" Reinhardt (American, 1913–1967) once commented, "Sculpture is something you bump into when you back up to look at a painting."


I've seen so many museum visitors walk right by huge or beautiful sculptures in countless galleries -- Ad Reinhardt has a point well taken. However, if those visitors were to interact with the sculptures with their cell phones, they certainly would have seen them. As everyone is so buried in their smart phones these days, this is a legitimate gimmick to get people to look. So my latent obsession is to make a cell phone controlled sculpture for the next Tucson Sculpture Festival in 2015.

We scanned visitors at the opening of the Tucson Sculpture Festival 2014, and I had a half life-sized figure milled out in Styrofoam. The following month, with some duct tape and a Roomba, the gentleman from Intel controlled the sculpture with his tablet, at the Southwest Maker Fest in Mesa. When the Styrofoam figure turned, moved forward, backward, and even followed pedestrians on it's own -- people noticed. Proof of concept!

James Stewart translated one of my drawings into a digital 3D object, with floating pieces.  Thus is cannot be made on a 3D printer.  However, I am tempted to mill some of the pieces out in Styrofoam, and connect them with rods and wires.  If I could turn some of those rods, then I could get the corresponding Styrofoam pieces to spin.  With a few stepper motors and an Arduino, we could turn those forms with command from a cell phone.  Of course, it might be easier to pull this off with a simpler figure.




I am inspired by Aaron Boim at QueLab in Albuquerque, who is making a Sleipnir Walin8r robot that will eventually run from a remote (cell phone?) signal:



Spheros can be controlled by a cell phone or tablet.  Maybe they can be hacked too.

David once suggested that we 3D print some Strange Attractors software creations:



These creations are made in the Chaoscope software.

From what I understand, you can create a "point cloud" from the software, but massaging it into a more physical form, like an STL file (which we could print on the Ultimaker), is hard to do.  However, there has got to be a way around that.  Apparently Geomagic is the software that people use to do that sort of thing professionally.  It's hugely expensive, but you can download a free 30 day trial

Anamorphic Stereograms

I would like to warp physical 3D space with 2D painting.

I think I can do that by creating anamorphic distortions and/or stereograms.  Or at least I could challenge the space inside viewers' heads through these tricks, which I can now conjure with software:

Erhard Schon, who once lived with Duer, did anamorphic woodcuts in the 1500s:

The Schon woodcut looks very different from an oblique angle -- than it does from the head on view (another example at this link).  An artist could warp physical space, by blowing that image up to the size of a mural.  At least he could change the perception of that space in front of a mural with anamorphosis.

I would love to squeeze 3 images from the same mural -- one image from the head on view, one from the oblique left angle, and another completely different image from the right view.  The 3 different (objective) perceptions would mentally separate 3 different visitors in front of the same image (and would essentially partition the room without walls, into 3 different spaces).  David Alfaro Siqueiros achieves this with his "polyangular perspective," which is basically a variation of anamorphosis.

Like Siqueiros, Andrea Pozzo (1642-1709) painted an anamorphic illusion in the Church of Sant'Ignazio in Rome:

"On the flat ceiling he painted an allegory of the Apotheosis of S. Ignatius, in breathtaking perspective. The painting, 17 m (55.7 ft) in diameter, is devised to make an observer, looking from a spot marked by a brass disc set into the floor of the nave, seem to see a lofty vaulted roof decorated by statues, while in fact the ceiling is flat"

Unlike Siqueiros' polyangular murals, the "dome" by Pozzo decays into awkward distortions when seen from any other point in the church, other than that marked by a brass disc.  Pozzo delivers only one image, Siqueiros aspired to deliver several images.

An artist can also challenge the spectator's space with both random dot stereograms (RDS) and autostereograms (SIRDS).  Both kinds of stereograms subvert a viewer's binocular vision, to deliver a spatial illusion when he crosses, or separates, his eyes.

I am more interested in marrying 2 images to conjure an unknown spatial illusion/object -- ie, using random dot stereograms

The 3D illusion above does not exist without both of the random dot squares.  Thus, I can marry the right square with a 3rd random dot square to create a completely different 3D illusion.  Likewise, I can marry the left square with a 4th random dot square to create yet another different 3D object.

I thought about creating some kind of sculpture with the stereogram pair.  Perhaps one square could be very large, but very distant.  The other square would be small and close.  When a viewer stood in front of the 2 squares, at the point where they looked of equal size (sitting next to each other), he could cross, or separate,  his eyes and bring about the 3D illusion.

What if one, or both of the random dot squares were anamorphic?

Other objective illusions:

Distance Illusion -- Lincoln in Dalivision.  From afar the image looks like Abraham Lincoln.  From up close it looks like a naked woman looking out the window:

Dali based his painting on a distortion of the Abraham Lincoln portrait on a $5 bill, done by Leon D. Harmon.  Later the technique became known as "photo mosaic"  (AndreaMosaic software).

I would like to "sculpt" space, like the Japanese did in the Ryōan-ji zen garden in Kyoto:

"The stones are placed so that the entire composition cannot be seen at once from the veranda. They are also arranged so that when looking at the garden from any angle (other than from above) only fourteen of the boulders are visible at one time. It is traditionally said that only through attaining enlightenment would one be able to view the fifteenth boulder."

I would like to divide an open space, without building walls, but rather employing tricks like anamorphosis, photomosaic, and stereogram techniques.  That way I can separate visitors in the same room by manipulating their perceptions.  What one individual experiences visually from one spot in the room, would be completely different from what another visitor experiences from a distant spot in the same room.  It would be like creating parallel universes under a single roof.


Chichen Itza adds an element of time to change the space.  Two days a year only, the shadows on El Castillo pyramid create the illusion of a serpent slithering down the slope.

"During the spring and autumn equinoxes, the late afternoon sun strikes off the northwest corner of the pyramid and casts a series of triangular shadows against the northwest balustrade, creating the illusion of a feathered serpent "crawling" down the pyramid."

Could we create harsh shadows, here in the Southwest, that make random dot stereograms?  If so, that experience would be limited to only  a few times a year, during a particular time of day.

One can also sculpt space with sound. The Exploratorium in San Francisco has two huge parabolic concrete reflectors (really just domes on their sides) facing each other, on the opposite sides of a very large room.  Two people sitting in the focal points of the dome can carry on a conversation without raising their voice, even though they are so far away that it's hard to see the other's face.  However, other people cannot eavesdrop from any other point in the room.  In this way the space is ruptured and warped, as 2 distant points are connected in the room, to make a small intimate sound space.

Two people sit opposite each other at approximately the focal point for each reflector, so that the sound coming from each reflector is focused at this point, allowing each visitor to clearly hear the other's voice in spite of the distance separating them or the noise in the museum."
